Depression is, rightly, characterised by a sustained period of unhappiness yet many symptoms of depression are not linked to the idea of depression in many people’s minds. People often say they are ‘feeling depressed’ when, actually, they are feeling nothing of the sort and are merely having one of life’s natural low points; depression lasts longer and affects a person’s ability to function. It can cause a sufferer’s personality and behaviour to change, and can cause them to experience eating disorders, sleep disorders, behavioural disorders and substance abuse; much of which isn’t associated with depression in many people’s minds and can, therefore, go untreated and unrecognised.

A Depressive condition is not normally one that lasts for much less than about two weeks, and will often last longer or reappear. A person prone to depression will find it recurs unless treated. The ‘milder’ forms of depressions such as Atypical Depression and Dysthymic Disorder can go unrecognised for a lifetime and the sufferer and their associates might merely consider them a less happy, or negative, person without realising they have a diagnosable condition. The symptoms to look out for are recurring low moods, a general dissatisfaction with life, lack of socialisation or even an inability to socialise, and even putting on or losing weight and alcohol abuse.

It is often the case that the way a person talks about themselves or about their life and the wider world is a first indication that they may be depressed. Expressions of inadequacy, insecurity and over sensitivity to the actions of others are often subtle signs that someone is experiencing difficulties. A general loss of interest in things or an inability to enjoy themselves or experience pleasure in socialising, hobbies, activities and even sex are all typical symptoms of depression in addition to the typical sadness and discouragement. The symptoms are not always obvious, since a depressive state induce high levels of exhilaration or ‘mania’ as a part of an unbalanced state. Having a bad temper, or expressing irritability or even hyper activity or, alternatively, tiredness and lack of concentration are all things which, individually, might just point to a bad night or low patch but when added together might be symptoms of depression.
